Eat whole grain pasta instead of white pasta. When whole grain pasta first came out, it wasn't great. It was off-color, difficult to get tender and just not good. However, it's much better now, and its unquestionably a better choice for everyone. White pasta offers nothing nutritionally. What is does is cause blood sugar to spike, leaves you with carb letdown later, and can make you feel heavy at first, and hungry later. Whole grain pasta provides protein, fiber, and other nutrients, doesn't cause blood sugar spikes, makes you feel satisfied much longer, without the tiredness that comes with carb letdown. Yes, whole grain pasta still has carbs - but carbs are not all the same; these are the good ones! So enjoy!

Eat whole grain bread instead of white bread. For the same reasons that whole grain pasta is better than white, whole grain bread is better than white. Check the label and look for a bread that has 1 or 2 grams of fiber for every 50 calories. Anything less is just going to leave you carb-crashing later and may feed your tastebuds, but will not offer much else.

Choose better sides. Instead of nutritionally empty sides like fries, mac and cheese or an iceberg lettuce side salad, have veggies, fruit or beans. Not only will you feel satisfied longer, you'll be getting some nutrients that you're probably lacking. Only about 30% of your health issues are inherited, which means that about 70% is up to you. Most people wouldn't feed their pets as poorly as they feed themselves. Why do we think that just because it's marketed and sold as edible that it's acceptable?
